Monument to a
turbulent past

Norfolk Island holds a unique place in British and Australian history, beginning with the discovery and naming by James Cook in 1774.
... a British settlement was established in 1788 ...but in 1814 the island was deliberately abandoned, ... In 1825, another British settlement was begun as a penal institution ... and was closed down in 1855. ... The next period of settlement began in 1856 when the entire population of Pitcairn Island was transported to Norolk Island.
This area of Kingston and Arthurs Vale also contains another settlement - that of the Polynesians who were here about 1000 years ago.
